Frequently Asked Questions

What's a ByteSite?

A ByteSite is small website designed to help professional and/or aspiring writers promote themselves online, and network with other writers.  Each ByteSite combines a weblog for online journaling with easy-to-use tools for uploading scripts, novels and other writing projects.   ByteSites are a new service from MovieBytes.com, one of the Internet's most popular destinations for screenwriters since 1997.

What's a weblog?

In it's simplest form, a weblog is an online journal or diary, but it can actually be used for any type of writing at all.  (This FAQ page, for example, was created with the WriterBytes WebLog editor.)   Check out these articles about the "blogging revolution:"

What's the cost?

You can set up a 7-day demo ByteSite for free, and if you decide to you'd like to keep the site online the cost is just $24.95 per year.

Is there software to install?

No.  You'll create and edit your ByteSite through simple forms on the WriterBytes website.  In other words, if you can browse the web you have all the technical expertise required to set up a ByteSite of your own.

Do all ByteSites look the same?

No.  You can select a variety of formats and color schemes to create the best look for your particular site.  You can also choose to enable or disable any of the standard ByteSite menu features.

What about images?

No problem!  You can upload a logo image for your site, and you can also attach images to your weblog entries.

What other features are available?

Every ByteSite includes the following features:

  • WebLog.  Our word-processor-like editor makes it fun and easy to share your thoughts with a potential audience as large as the Internet.
  • Projects.  Upload your screenplays, novels, short stories, movie reviews, etc.  You can enter your projects directly through WriterBytes, or upload them in a format your readers can download such as Adobe PDF or Microsoft Word.
  • Message Board.   Host an interactive message board to discuss your writing - a powerful tool for creating online virtual writing workshops!
  • Outside Links.  Turn your site into an online resource for your readers by posting your favorite links to outside websites.
  • Contact Info.  Make it easy for your readers to get in touch by posting online or off-line contact information.

What if I don't want my projects to be available to everyone on the Internet?

No problem!  WriterBytes offers a variety of access methods to restrict the availability of your content to specific individuals.  You can even mix-and-match by creating a home page weblog that's available to anyone while password-protecting the other areas of your ByteSite.

Will I have my own web site address?

That's up to you.  Your ByteSite can automatically be accessed through your WriterBytes keyword.  The web site you're reading right now, for example, can be accessed through the WriterBytes keyword FAQ, and has the following web site address:

http://www.writerbytes.com?faq

If you'd prefer a more personalized address, you can register a domain of your own and have your visitors forwarded automatically to your ByteSite.

Can I have more than one ByteSite?

Yes, absolutely.  ByteSites are actually a little bit addictive, and you may discover that you want to maintain one ByteSite to promote your writing projects, and another more private ByteSite for personal journaling.   Each ByteSite needs to registered seperately ($24.95/year), but you can set up as many as you'd like and maintain them all through the same account.

How can I subscribe?

You can subscribe online with Visa or Mastercard, or by sending a check:
